Happy Social Media Day!

Dear Magnets:

"Today we acknowledge and celebrate the revolution of media becoming social. A day that honors the technological and societal advancements that have allowed us to have a dialogue, to connect and to engage not only the creators of media, but perhaps more importantly, one another." ~http://mashable.com/2010/06/30/happy-social-media-day/

Thank you for your continued support for the growth of our online social community for theatre that is Artist Magnet (AM) on Ning, launching the theatre world into the 21st century. Celebrate Artist Magnet's Birthday we're 2 years old!

Dear Magnets:

“The theater, bringing impersonal masks to life, is only for those who are virile enough to create new life: either as a conflict of passions subtler than those we already know, or as a complete new character.” ~Alfred Jarry

Join us in wishing a Happy Birthday to Artist Magnet! - 2 years ago the idea of bringing theatre artists together through shows and venues everywhere was conceived and Artist Magnet was born. We are now pleased to have the support of thousands of artists and theatres from over 100 countries in launching the theatre world into the 21st century...

As you may have heard, as Ning has suddenly decided to begin charging for its services, our goal is to generate $500.00 in contributions the next 30 days to maintain the current operations of our support network http://artistmagnet.ning.com, including:

2. Your ability to view, post, and share music, video, and applications with thousands of other members online...

You can help by contributing just $2 to keep Artist Magnet running on Ning for 1 more year:

Artist Magnet - Happy World Theater Day!

Dear Magnets:

"Theatre affords us insight and hope. It allows us direct access to the wisdom of the ages. It offers affirmation of our joys and consolation for our sorrows. It opens up avenues of exploration into our own souls, daring us to confront even the darkest truths about ourselves. Tyrone Guthrie called it the oldest social, moral, and political platform in the history of Western culture. And today we need it more than ever." ~Des McAnuff

Artist Magnet 64 Days 2 Launch - Oct Part III

Dear Magnets:

The following are a few words from the blog of premier LA Artistic Director Guillermo Aviles-Rodriguez:

“Being one of the only Neo-Chicano (think ambivalent Mexican American under 40) Artistic Directors in Los Angeles theatre is a mixed blessing. On one side you get few non-Latinos at your shows and enjoy relative anonymity in the context of the wider Los Angeles theatre community. But on the other side you get many calls from people wanting to double check the exact meaning or correct pronunciation of Spanish words and phrases. One also gets many calls when theatre companies give the multicultural play wheel a spin and it lands on the Latino/Hispanic/Chicano/Mexican-American/Brown slot, it is then that people say, ‘let’s be culturally sensitive and bring in a swarthy director pronto...’”

Artist Magnet - Message from the Founder - Oct Part I

Dear Magnets:

“As an artist, I believe that the point of all drama is to give the audience a fuller appreciation, an understanding of reality… plays can turn reality on its head; they can turn it inside out and confuse all the issues so that the audience is left with a heap of unanswered questions. But if a play leaves the heart, mind, body and soul untouched, unenlightened, that is unpardonable…” ~Craig Lucas

Artist Magnet - Message from the Founder - 9-2-09

Dear Magnets:

“Theater at its best is a healing experience... anything from a gentle departure from the day's drudgery to a cathartic experience for someone who realizes he's been on the wrong path. It's not my job to tell you to react. Actors are court jesters, and there's nothing more to it. Actors are not political icons. When the king is ready for a laugh, he calls us. When he is done laughing, we walk away. And if we're not beheaded, we're in good shape…” ~Douglas Sills

Dear Magnets:

“Theater is more than psychology. It should rise above reality. It should become poetry. To me, theater is about paradise, perhaps a lost or utopian paradise, but a paradise anyway. It is about a dream. Theater should show great black holes, in which diamonds suddenly glitter...” ~Ivo van Hove

“Fundamental conditions of the drama separate it from the other arts… the theatre is an art which reposes upon the work of many collaborators is addressed to the group-mind, it is based upon a pretense and its very nature calls out a multiplication of pretenses, its action takes place in a perpetual present time.” ~Thornton Wilder

“Communication between playwright and audience: In all human experience, there are parallels which permit common understanding in the telling and hearing, and it is the frightening responsibility of an artist to make what is directly or allusively close to his own being communicable and understandable, however disturbingly, to the hearts and minds of all whom he addresses...” ~Tennessee Williams

“The general public, thank goodness, has not yet lost its thirst for real culture and ideas. In Broadway shows the singers look plastered over with melted wax.
